Biriwa portion of Cape Coast-Mankessim highway closed due to fuel tanker accident.

The Biriwa portion of the Cape Coast-Mankessim highway in the Central Region was closed to traffic for hours on Wednesday evening to enable personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) avert a fuel tanker explosion.

The fuel tanker was involved in an accident.

Farmers and all other potential fire threats in and around the area were also evacuated to avoid any disaster after scene risk assessment by the Fire Service.

The situation created heavy vehicular traffic in the night.

The bulk oil tank that was travelling from Atuabo in the Western Region to Tema had fallen on the road, needing the Fire Service to cool the tanker with foam compound and water mist to avert any explosion.

The Central Regional Public Relations Department of the Ghana National Fire Service explained that the cause of the accident is under police investigation.

“The driver who was travelling from Atuabo to Tema sustained some minor injuries as a result of the crash.”
